Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica + The Catacombs + Lunch

The tour begins from the Esquilino Square and reaching the Vatican Museums, the most important ancient art collection in the world. 7 Km to walk across, 1,400 rooms with 65,000 works of art. The several galleries: of the Candelabra with fresco paintings and statues; of Tapestries with Flemish and Italian examples and the historical maps painted by Danti in the XV c.

The Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo, Botticelli, Signorelli, Rosselli, Ghirlandaio, Pinturicchio and Perugino.

Bernini’s Royal Staircase leads to the Saint Peter‘s Basilica, was rebuilt in the XVI and XVII c. The interior of the basilica is decorated with thousands of gilt tesserae, prized marbles, Byzantine and Baroque mosaics, the renowned Pieta by Michelangelo and Saint Peter’s Tomb.

The tour ends at Saint Peter’s Square.
Because of the general Audience of the Pope, on Wednesday the St. Peter’s Basilica will be only visited from outside

The tour starts at the Esquilino Square with the visit of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major dating back to the V c. A.D. with its beautiful mosaics and the relic of the Crib of the Infant Jesus.
Next is the visit of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome, built under Constantine and renovated by Borromini in the XVII c., contains numerous columns and precious marbles, many taken from the Coliseum.
The Holy Staircase supposed to be the staircase of Pilate’s residence which Christ descended after His condemnation. It has been brought from Jerusalem to Rome by Saint Helena, mother of Constantine.

The Catacombs, the ancient underground cemeteries, testimony of the early Christians’ faith, these cover a length of 120 Km.

The Ancient Apian Way, built in 312 B.C., with the Chapel of Domine Quo Vadis, the place of the apparition of Christ to Saint Peter.
